Toward the Regulation of the Location-Based Services Industry: Influencing Australian Government Telecommunications Policy ()

Mobile telephone penetration in Australia is among the highest in the world. With so many Australians relying on their mobile device for secure voice and data communications, the sensitivity and magnitude of stored location information being gathered for each person is only now being realised. The collection, use and disclosure of location information by stakeholders including government agencies, private enterprise, and subscribers and their monitors needs to be regulated. This research will place Australia at the forefront of telecommunications policy, and provide legislative recommendations that can aid in overcoming the challenges to ensure subscriber privacy.
